What is a friend?
According to Miriam-Webster's Dictionary the first 2 definitions of a friend is:
1 a : one attached to another by affection or esteem: ACQUAINTANCE
2 a : one that is not hostile b : one that is of the same nation, party, or group
While I somewhat agree with the first...I definitely do NOT agree with the 2nd definition. Because if that were the truth..I'd have to knock 1/2 to 3/4 of what I consider my friend pool off the list. Thankfully I do not go by Webster's...so don't worry PEEPS you are safe! :o)
In the last couple of weeks I have had to really assess what is a friend to me. So I thought I would share what it is to me.
-A friend to me, is like family...only that YOU get to make the choice to have them in your life.
-A friend to me, is someone you can count on for a smile, pick me up, or comfort in knowing they are "there" even tho' they are miles away.
-A friend to me, does NOT have to agree with you...and actually I prefer it if they don't. Difference makes the world go round, and allows us to see beauty and truth in others.
-A friend to me, is someone who may have touched your life long ago...and although you may not ever see or talk with them again, it's the comfort of having them pop into your mind, to know that they truly made an impact on your life.
-A friend to me, can be found at work, at school, in church, at the convenience store, in the class you take at the gym 1 day a week, the lady at the checkout counter, and of course in your very own house.
-A friend to me, is all about the memories. Making them and keeping them. Every moment can be made into a memory...if you just take time to bask in it.
-A friend to me, is someone who makes my life brighter and better. Surrounding myself with positive people keeps me going. (and I hope I keep them going to!)
-A friend to me, is a gift from God.
I am sure I have more..and encourage you to share what a friend is to you.
Many people have different opinions on friends. Some people only consider a select few people their "friends". ..and other people they interact with are "co-workers" and "fellow parishoners" "other parents" etc. I actually had a discussion with someone about Facebook Friends...and if they were really "friends". Hey, I am choosing to believe that they are! Why? because sharing one little expression, news, or even a prayer request brings people closer. And what is it going to hurt to be kinder and actually reach out and be-friend someone?
While I do have a what I consider a couple of BIG handfuls of really "true friends". I also feel I have an endless list of Friends. Some of those friends may not consider me a friend..but that does not mean I don't consider them one. I do really believe that friends are a Gift from God..and I am going to act like a spoiled kid at a Birthday Party and I am opening all my Gifts!! And I of course want to keep them all (close to my heart). Friends and Family (which are my friends too!) are the true riches in life. God created all of us, not money...not fame. So that is why I am choosing NOT to be picky about His gifts. Thank you, God for all of my gifts! I want You and my Gifts to know how much I truly appreciate them! ALL OF THEM!
